Understanding Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) has affected many for hundreds of years but only recently has there become a clearer RLS diagnosis. The disease has been identified for approximately 20 years. RLS is very real and very debilitating. RLS is a recognized medical condition, and often under-diagnosed incorrectly.  It can be quite painful if it is severe. Restless Legs Syndrome plagues many people around the world, and occurs in both sexes, although the incidence may be slightly higher among women. Fortunately, there is a wealth of information available to those who suffer from this disorder. RLS is a chronic and slowly progressive disorder. Estimates of prevalence vary considerably, from 12 million to more than 30 million adults in the United States.

It can affect family members and may even be a hereditary condition. Symptoms usually progressively worse over time and can become severe enough to be disabling. The symptoms seem to be more severe during the evening and at night and far less severe during the morning.
